JThe Beggar Boys are (from left to right): The Beggar Boys, who take their name from an old English dance tune, have been performing Celtic and colonial music since 2002. Combining both traditional and original tunes and texts, their repertoire represents the living tradition of folk music. The group has recorded two CD's, "The Darkest Midnight: A Celtic Nativity," and "Salem's Musik", an album of colonial music. Their music has also been featured on WDAV 89.9 FM's program The Main Street Sessions. Members Michael Albert studied voice and oboe at the University of Southern Maine, and has also studied at the Interlochen and Blockhaven Arts Schools. As an oboe soloist, Michael has appeared with the Maine Music Society and the Portland and Bangor Symphony Orchestras. As a violinist and vocalist, he has performed with Saltarello, Ecclesia, The University of Southern Maine and Colby College Collegia, Southern Maine Orchestra, Ensemble Galant, the Choral Arts Camerata, the Portland Early Music Consort, and directs the Southern Maine String Quartet. His vocal awards include the Lillian Nordica, Louise Meyers Vocal Awards and his oboe awards include the Emily K. Rand, Kotzschmar, and the Maine Bay Chamber Concerts' Harvey Picker prize. He is a founding member of the innovative early music duo Blue Lobster and a member of the Celtic band Anam. Michael co-composes/edits film scores with Maine composer Jan Carter for Little Voice Productions in Denver, Colorado. He is a featured soloist on several of her recordings and can be heard in the PBS documentaries “Sweet Ambition” and “The Polygamist’s Daughter.” He currently performs with the Schola Cantorum of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, ME. Henry Lebedinsky, native of Russia, holds degrees in historical keyboard performance from Bowdoin College and the Longy School of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree with distinction as a student of Peter Sykes. An active performer on organ, harpsichord, and clavichord, he has given numerous recitals around the country and has performed with Saltarello, Revels, the Portland Early Music Consort, the Harvard Early Music Society, The South Coast Chamber Music Society, The New Philharmonia Orchestra, The Concertino Ensemble of Rostock, Germany, and Holland’s Ensemble New Amsterdam among others. Henry is the director of the Ecclesia Ensemble, a group specializing in Baroque women composers. He also plays fiddle and bodhrán with the Celtic band Anam Seanda. A church musician since the age of 17, he currently serves as organist and director of music at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Davidson, NC. Kate Minogue is a singer/songwriter hailing from Baltimore. Originally a classical flute player and self-professed band nerd, she began to direct her musical energies to singing and the guitar upon coming to Davidson, NC in 2001. Her love of folk music and flute playing were happily combined during a three month stint in Ireland, where she took up traditional Irish flute playing. Kate joined the Beggar Boys in 2005, singing lead vocals and playing guitar and wooden flute. She was voted Reader's Pick for Charlotte's Best Female Vocalist 2006 in Creative Loafing magazine. Kate's first record, Right Now, features 10 original songs and was independently released in September 2006. She frequently performs locally as a solo act or as a duo with singer Kelley Gardner. Larry Young plays everything from Celtic to colonial to maritime. He also performs in the groups Poor Richard's Penny and Ye Mariners All and hosts a twice-weekly session at O'Neill's Pub in Salem. He has studied with Matt Glaser and appeared at the Mystic Sea Music Festival and Salem Maritime Festival. |
